During the festival in 2020, Yannick will perform with his quintet in Felix Meritis, on friday August 14.

The 23rd edition of the Grachtenfestival will take place in Amsterdam from 7 t 16 August 2020. Renowned and rising stars play classical music and jazz from all continents. Together, they form a rich program. From today, Wednesday July 1st, you can insure your spot because our ticket sales have started.

The Grachtenfestival is on and we are proud to present our program to you. In this newsletter we already give you a glimpse of the veil with a number of highlights from our program. Although fewer tickets are available than there were in previous years, the program with over 80 concerts is also diverse this year, with classical music and jazz from all over the world at 30 locations throughout Amsterdam. We proudly present the program of the Grachtenfestival 2020, in which various concerts can also be followed for free via live streaming.

Wonder
The theme of the upcoming edition is Wonder and the miracle of music will have an extra dimension during these times. For this edition of the festival, several milestones from the past centuries will be remembered, which have brought the music to how we listen and experience it now. Music does not stand still, but develops and innovates just like any other sector. Music moves with the times and is sometimes both progressive and timeless. We encourage progress and cherish the icons of the past. What a wealth, what a diversity, what a wonderful world of music. What a wonder!

The program is online now and we would like to highlight a few gems for you:

Meesterlijk! series
In the atmospheric Winter Garden of the Krasnapolsky Hotel, Artist in Residence Emmy Storms and GrachtenfestivalPrijs nominees Daan Boertien, Channa Malkin and Shin Sihan will be presenting the Meesterlijk! Series from 10 to 13 August: an evening with a varied program from Celtic sounds to adventurous folk melodies to engaging vocals about motherhood and the dark music of a poet-inspired Mahler.

Premiere pieces
This year, too, meaningful musical pieces will be premiered during the Grachtenfestival, such as the music theater performance Within Time by the collective House of Makers, where the musicians and makers were inspired by the difficult times of corona. Tijn Wybenga entered into a digital dialogue from his living room with the band members of AM.OK for his composition assignment Het Wonder van Amsterdam. As part of the Opus Novum series, Kluster5 focuses on old and new works from Dutch soil in their total artwork about perceiving realities. The early classical opera La gara delle grazie has never been revived before and this year the moving story is told by the young musicians of the Das Neue Mannheimer Orchester conducted by the Canadian harpsichordist Anders Muskens. And finally we invite you to the musical performance Uit Einstein's Vioolkist, about the musical past of Albert Einstein, played by the Delta Piano Trio and with funny and moving anecdotes told by Ab Nieuwdorp.

The Evening of the GrachtenfestivalPrijs
The Evening of the GrachtenfestivalPrijs will take place on Friday 14 August and a professional jury consisting of Frederike Berntsen (reviewer for Classical music, Trouw), Aart-Jan van de Pol (director of the Dutch Violin Competition) and Marlon Titre (Head of Classical Department, Royal Conservatory of Den Haag), determine which of the aforementioned nominees wins the GrachtenfestivalPrijs and thereby wins the residency for 2021.

We are looking forward to the Grachtenfestival 2020 and hope to see you there. Just like last year, a festival newspaper will be published as an attachment in Het Parool on 11 July and you can also order the newspaper here, for a fee. Due to the corona crisis, we draw your attention to our visitor protocol. Although we do not oblige you to wear a face mask, we do recommend wearing one during our concerts. That is why you can buy mouth masks with our logo during the ordering process. We will prepare these for you when you visit the next concert.
