A SONGBOOK OF RARE FEELINGS
A songbook of rare feelings is a performance of new poetry and compositions written specially for VONK. For this project, composer Nicoline Soeter invited poets Kayo Chingonyi (UK, Zambia), Nancy Campbell (UK), songwriter Lucky Fonz III and composers Kate Moore, Morris Kliphuis and Remy Alexander to join her in writing the program. A songbook of rare feelings is a miraculous collection of moods, unraveled nuances and musical sophistication. Ten new songs composed for soprano, saxophones, clarinets and percussion.
This is the second edition of VONK's songs projects. In these projects, the ensemble wants to put "artsongs" back on the map as a genre. From Dowland to Schubert or Debussy, artsongs are traditionally a musical and literature genre. Poetry and music are close to each other. The language in poetry is often indirect and understated; through music, layering and depth can become even more palpable. Many newly written compositions for singers use existing texts that are older than 70 years for copyright reasons, but language and form change. Schubert also wrote his songs on poems by peers.
The ensemble's colorful lineup and permanent collaboration with a singer and composer, gives the special opportunity to explore this genre and continue to grow artistically.
