The narrow and intimate Oudezijds Achterburgwal was dug around 1385, making it the second oldest canal in Amsterdam, after the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The canal can be divided in two parts, either side of the Oude Doelenstraat and the Oude Hoogstraat. The northern section is part of the famous Wallen (Red Light District). The southern section houses a number of faculties of the University of Amsterdam.
