De Duif

Prinsengracht 756 1017 LD Amsterdam

Amidst the stately homes, church De Duif, where Jos Brink once preached, is a hidden gem on the Prinsengracht. If you look closely, you will discover a particularly successful neoclassical building. Its modest exterior hides a surprisingly grand interior.

The present church owes its name to its predecessor, the 17th-century hidden church 'Het Vrededuifje' which was once located on the Kerkstraat. The first stone for the present Duifkerk, designed by Leiden architect Th. Molkenboer, was laid in April 1857.

Due to lack of funds, the church fell into increasing disrepair during the 20th century. For more than twenty-five years the building stood packed away because the monumental facade had become detached. After restoration, De Duif reopened in 2002. During the restoration, the original murals reappeared under layers of wall paint.

rolstoel De Duif is wheelchair accessible and a wheelchair restroom is available.
