An Expedition into the music of two important composers with very different styles… Yet there is some resemblance in the works of Johannes Brahms and Olivier Messiaen. The role of nature in their music, for example, with Messiaen in his ‘Catalogue d’oiseaux’ in which he expresses the sounds birds make. Or 'Des canons aux étoiles', a work of twelve parts for orchestra, equally based on exotic birds, but also on landscapes and colours. There are landscapes in Brahms’ music too. When Brahms uses the horn, it evokes instantly the image of a forest, or a view on the meadows.
The monumental horn trio in E-flat major by Johannes Brahms was the basis for a joint effort of three outstanding musicians. Rob van de Laar is among the most talented horn players of the Netherlands and he is currently horn soloist at the Gelders Orkest. He plays with several chamber music formations, and he is a substitute for the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest and the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. Violinist Mathieu van Bellen is one of the nominees for the GrachtenfestivalPrijs 2015. This London-based musician enjoyed the master classes of Grand Master Ida Haendel, Shlomo Mintz and Pinchas Zukerman. Pianist and musicologist Ralph van Raat is a very experienced Master himself and a ‘passionate advocate of 20th-century music.’ He is a much sought after soloist and composers like Gavin Bryars, David Lang and Tan Dun all dedicate new works to him.
