In 2013, soprano Maartje Rammeloo was one of 150 female singers chosen as finalists in the prestigious Belvedère opera competition. With pianist Marta Liébana, Rammelo will pay homage to the three greatest sopranos from Down Under: Nellie Melba, Joan Sutherland and Kiri te Kanawa. It’s an exceptionally original interpretation of this year’s Grachtenfestival theme, “Upside Down”.
The Hans Gabor Belvedère Singing Competition, founded in Vienna in 1980, was held in Amsterdam for the first time in 2013. After preliminary rounds in more than 50 countries, 150 finalists were selected from around 2,000 candidates to come to the finals in Amsterdam. The finals will take place in the Dutch capital in odd years and in other cities in even ones – for example, in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 2014. An international jury of intendants and casting directors for famous opera houses will judge the candidates.
