Ensemble ‘de Nootzaak’ is about to go on an Expedition, and their Musical Notes are the only luggage they'll bring along. With flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, the Expedition will start in Denmark, the land of Carl Nielsen. The first part of his ‘Kvintet’, which was inspired on Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, will provide a tranquil departure, yet one that is full of promise. They move on to Germany, where Johan Gottlieb Naumann composed his ‘Duett fur Oboe und Fagott’ in the 18th century.
This classical work is where the double reed instruments in the quintet will truly shine. It was also in Germany that, one hundred years later, August Klughardt composed a very diverse work, which brings all kinds of styles and instruments together. Even the exotic Brasil is discovered, where Heitor Villa-Lobos was inspired by J.S. Bach, when he wrote 'Bachianas Brasileiras': Brazilian Bach-like pieces.
As a final destination, the ensemble will visit the castle of the French King René I in Aix-en-Provence. Darius Milhaud, who was born in the same city, was fascinated by the king’s history, and he named the series of seven short, airy, lightweight pieces for quintet after his chimney: 'La Cheminée du Roi René'.
