With over 160 concerts and activities programmed, the Grachtenfestival 2009, the opening of the classical music season, has been able to welcome over 70,000 visitors. Last year there were still 68,000. Tickets to nearly all concerts sold out. Even at the Children’s Grachtenfestival concerts were well attended. The new Hermitage Amsterdam museum was at the heart of the festival and acted as a concert venue.
During its twelfth edition the festival travelled to the Plantage neighbourhood in Amsterdam for the first time. The Grachtenfestival programming in the Plantage neighbourhood was intertwined with those in the City Centre, on the banks of the river IJ, and in Amsterdam-Noord. Thus, the twelth festival edition embraced a large part of the city of Amsterdam.
The twelfth festival edition was the last festival lead by director Alma Netten. The Grachtenfestival 2010 will open the classical music season from 14 to 22 August.
