Chieko Donker Duyvis presents: Câmara Colorida
Chieko & Câmara Colorida are a young, multicultural collective that takes you into a fairy-tale sounding world with music from all corners of the world.
Accessible and refreshing in their own compositions and improvisations, they let jazz, classical influences and Brazilian grooves come together in a unique way.
The young up-and-coming cellist and singer Chieko Donker Duyvis weaves jazz improvisation, classical music, Brazilian grooves and her own compositions with the fairytale sounds of her cello and vocals in her own unique way. Born in Amsterdam to a Brazilian/Japanese family, she began her musical journey as a classical cellist, playing concerts in Europe and Mexico with her trio and chamber music projects with musicians from the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Not allowing herself to be categorized, she has since built bridges to other art forms and now focuses on her own compositions, Brazilian music, jazz and free improvisation.
She walks her own creative path and was invited to sing at Podium Witteman, Grachtenfestival and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ as the headliner of her own ensemble. Chieko has a passion for interdisciplinary projects and regularly collaborates with poets, visual artists and dancers. She created the music for the dance performance MI:T by Dance Connects Company and created a new opera at the Opera Forward Festival with improvising string quintet. She also worked with visual artist Floor van Keulen, where she blended free improvisation and painting. As a composer and arranger she wrote for both jazz ensembles and classical chamber orchestra. She composed the film music for director Mischa Dols' short film "Bushman" and the trailer for the Parade. As a soloist, she was invited to perform her own compositions at the Ansan International Environmental Festival in South Korea. Chieko has played at the Concertgebouw several times: a collab with Spoken Word where she sang her own compositions, and in 2021 in the Great Hall, where she played free improvisations and her own work.
