Ananta, Sanskrit for "infinite", lives up to its name with this varied program. Tabla player Heiko Dijker and violinist Lenneke van Staalen have played Indian classical music together for years, while violinist and Artist In Residence Emmy Storms and Cynthia Liem explored the Western classical repertoire together. Last year, the two duos came together for their first concert as a quartet, during the Grachtenfestival 2019, blurring all the boundaries between the two styles, between East and West and between improvisation and composition.
The question of where we ended up immediately arises as soon as Fratres by Arvo Pärt sounds. With a few well-chosen exceptions, the program mainly consists of pieces without a clear linear structure: you won't know how long it will continue. But at the same time you disappear into the sounds and you hope that the sounds will be infinite. Until finally during the last part of JacobTV a climax clearly arrives, hereby announcing the end of the concert. This program is an ode to melancholy and to eternity. So Ananta!
Please, note! To strengthen the eastern atmosphere, this concert will be given without chairs. We invite you to take your own pillows and blankets to relax during the concert. Are you incapable of sitting on the floor and is it necessary for you to make use of a chair? Please, contact kassa@grachtenfestival.nl stating 'seets Indian Nights'.
Prior to the concert, you can order your drinks at the bar and take these with you into the concerthall. After the concert, you will be given the opportunity to view a selection of the museum. In case of good weather, the VOC ship will also be accessible!
