In cooperation with Stichting Opera op Zak, Museum Van Loon and Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, this season sees Vom Fischer und seiner Frau presented on stage. To mark their tenth anniversary and a decade of cooperation with Museum Van Loon, Stichting Opera op Zak chose this exceptional opera by the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957). Schoeck, who is known primarily for his songs and his chamber music, composed this “dramatic cantata” in 1930 for soprano, tenor, bass-baritone and full orchestra. Specially for this anniversary, Vom Fischer und seiner Frau is being performed in a new chamber music arrangement by the conductor Ivo Meinen.
The opera is based on a fairy tale by the brothers Grimm. A very poor fisherman and his wife live in a hovel by the sea. The fisherman catches an enchanted fish and his wife is granted a wish, which is that they should have a cottage. The women is pleased, but not yet satisfied. She wants a castle, and that wish is then granted too. Nothing is ever enough once she starts becoming greedy. She asks for more and more... How far can she go, and who will stop her? The fairy tale about ambition and greed is a wonderful parable for our times, holding up a mirror to us. You may not have enough and may want more - but at what cost? The opera is suitable for young and old, and is performed in German.
