20 Leading Dutch Composers in their Twenties
Toonzetters is a concert in which twenty young Dutch composers take you along in their story. Different styles and characters, from neo-romantic percussion to indie rock on piano or jazzy electronics, pass in review at high speed. In the course of an hour, a lively portrait of contemporary music unfolds. Add to this the energetic playing of four excellent Dutch musicians, combined with the hypnotic film images of Bowie Verschuuren and the direction of Jos van Kan, the stage is set for a unique concert.
Composer Primo Ish-Hurwitz, winner of Alba Rosa Viëtor 2022, makes an attempt to do so with Toonzetters. From the first note, the audience is carried away in a musical stream that will only come to a halt an hour later.
The twenty young Dutch composers will make themselves heard during a special concert experience designed by them. Developments on the musical front lines are rapid, both artistically and technologically. Composers are finding new ways to appeal to a wider audience, 20th century 'taboos' such as tonality are no longer an issue, old traditions are being flirted again and at the same time the use of electronics is becoming more and more mainstream.
With all these different sounds, styles and influences, it becomes an overwhelming experience that you as a listener can't help but to indulge in. It no longer revolves around an individual composer but shows how enormously diverse new music has become in this 21st century.
Toonzetters is made possible by Oranjewoud Festival in co-production with November Music and Dag in de Branding.
