Xian Zhang, the artistic director of the NJO, will return to the stand this summer. She will conduct the young orchestra through a history of music. This and the one-woman performance by Rosanne Philippens means that the audience can look forward to a great concert. In the romantic Violin Concerto No. 1 by Szymanowski, reckless orchestra passages alternate with a sweeping tour de force by the soloist.
Violinist Rosanne Philippens has been nominated for the GrachtenfestivalPrijs 2014.
Johannes Brahms was often inspired by his talented predecessors. In 1873 he adapted a theme from a work of Haydn, Feldparthia, and turned it into the Haydn Variations. He was unaware of the fact that this work was actually not by Haydn - Feldparthia was a folk song, better known by the name "Saint Anthony Chorale". Nowadays the Haydn Variations by Brahms go by the name of Saint Anthony Variations. From Brahms it is a small step to Schumann; the programme features his Symphony No. 4. Because Zhang has chosen Gustav Mahler's version of this symphony, the audience will hear a concert by Schumann as well as by Mahler. NJO artistic coordinator Wim Vos will have an introductory conversation with a top performer at this concert.
