Nathalia is the younger sister of Maria Milstein and also a huge musical talent. Be sure to come to the Waalse Kerk (church) to listen to the wonderful grand piano with Nathalia Milstein playing behind it.
The program presents a variety of solo piano works composed within a common period of time in the history of music, corresponding to the transition from romanticism to modernism. Tchaikovsky's intimate pieces and Franck's monumental Prélude, Choral and Fugue are both wonderful examples of truly romantic music, although Franck uses already a more complex harmonical language, thus giving the listener a glimpse of upcoming changes in music. Debussy's Suite Bergamasque is a tender and vibrant tribute to baroque music, as is Franck's work, although Debussy uses those ancient titles as inspiration for colorful musical fantasies; his language will become revolutionary for the following generations of composers. Scriabin's late music plays with atonality, and in particular his 10th Sonata, last one composed for piano. Its ungraspable atmosphere, with distant or real sounds of nature, reflects all the intricate spirituality of the composer, whose input in music history had also a great impact on its evolution in the 20th century.
