“Great sound, great timing, tasteful, great choices. Also important: tranquility. All-in all just terrific,” according to the jury of the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours about the young, upcoming jazz trumpeter Ian Cleaver. Ian Cleaver (1996) learned to play the trumpet at the age of five at a wind orchestra in the Jordaan, Amsterdam. At present he is studying at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and he has performed in several formations on many stages like North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis, Paradiso and the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam. In 2016 he won the first prize at the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours. For this occasion he joins forces with the trio of jazz guitarist Gijs Idema, who recently graduated cum laude at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and who also won the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours (2014).
At the Grachtenfestival the quartet performs a refreshing mix of their own compositions and hits by jazz legends Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn a.o.
