The musical theatre performance ‘No love without liberty’ is based on the Curaçaoan slave legend about Buchi Fil.
Mosa Nena is the most beautiful slave girl at a Dutch plantation on Curaçao. For years, she has been the favourite and mistress of the plantation owner. That is, until she meets the new slave Buchi Fil: a large and awe-inspiring man who refuses to bend to his master’s will, no matter how many times the whip comes down. When passion sparks between this pair, the consequences are dramatic – for everyone.
Accompanied by singer Izaline Calister and actor Kees Scholten of Het Volksoperahuis, Raymi Sambo spins out this stirring tale of romance. The Caribbean rhythms and melodies of singer Izaline Calister, two percussionists and a guitarist, share the stage with Western classical music performed by the Dudok Kwartet. With contributions by the youth dance group Untold Empowerment from Amsterdam’s south-east district.
