Emma recently won the 2nd award and Publieksprijs at the Oskar Back Violin Competition. Together with Caspar Vos she will perform a beautiful program based around Grieg & Debussy.
Grieg wrote his first two sonatas in fairly short order after each other. He incorporated many Norwegian folk melodies into them, so they are both light in character. His third sonata came years later, which is very different and also took him much longer to write. It is darker in character and he himself was pleased with the fact that this piece showed musically "a broader horizon" than just the national folk melodies that were used in the first two sonatas. It is his last work of chamber music and he plays this one most fondly.
Emma and Caspar find it interesting to play one of the early sonatas and this last sonata by Grieg in one program because it shows different sides of Grieg's style. Debussy's violin sonata was the last piece he wrote and is one of Emma's favourite works. Quite short and dense, but with an abundance of color and character.
