Winner of Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours Publieksprijs 2016 is the Ardemus Quartet. This young saxophone quartet promises a worldly program on an adventurous location: De Hollandsche Manege, the oldest horse riding school with a history that goes all the way back to 1744.
The ensemble will perform ‘Six Bagatelles’ by György Ligeti. The quartet scrutinized every detail to find the best adaptation, suitable for their conceert: Six short pieces with a very versatile character and some folk elements.
In this program the folk influence pops up elsewhere. Like in ‘Four Hungarian Dances’ by the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas and in ‘Grave et Pesto’ by the French Jean Rivier. Then the quartet takes you on a trip to Córdoba, Sarajevo, and Addis Ababa, the cities that were visited by Guillermo Lago, the composer who turned this urban experiences into works for saxophone quartets.
“These four musicians of different nationalities united their forces and managed to reach a very high level within a short period of time. This high level is supported by the sheer joy of playing and an enthralling musicality.’ Arno Borkamp, saxophone teacher at Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
