Jazz Gems: Chieko Donker Duyvis
Ode to nature in symphony by cellist/vocalist
Nature Symphony, the new composition by composer, cellist and singer Chieko Donker Duyvis, is an ode to the Mata Atlântica rainforest. This rainforest, from which Donker Duyvis’s family originates, is one of the most endangered in the world: currently, only 10% remains.
Once a natural area is destroyed, the sounds of that place are lost forever. Every forest has its own symphony, made up of the sounds of all the animals and insects combined. Chieko made field recordings in the Mata Atlântica forest and incorporated these sounds into contemporary jazz and chamber music. The resulting symphony is not only an artistic work, but also an invitation to reflect on how we as humans interact with nature.
