Elin Haver & Jana Schell

Ode to the viola

At a unique venue—the spacious rooftop garden of The William in Amsterdam East—violist Elin Haver and pianist Jana Schell present a tribute to the viola, an instrument that rarely takes center stage. For this special occasion a grand piano will be lifted onto the roof and the garden transformed into a concert venue. The program includes Robert Schumann’s Märchenbilder four expressive musical fairy tales.

The concert also highlights works by female composers. Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata caused a sensation at its premiere in 1919 and was later rediscovered. Today it rightfully holds a place of honor in the viola repertoire. Audiences will also hear Nuit Calme by the Amsterdam composer Henriëtte Bosmans originally written for cello but equally beautiful on the viola. The program concludes with the fiery Scherzo from the FAE Sonata by Johannes Brahms. Throughout the concert the performers will introduce the music themselves. Elin Haver gained experience in this role through the Classic Express where winners of the Princess Christina Competition introduce children to classical music.
