Chaerin Im Trio

Chaerin Im is considered one of the most striking new voices on the European and Asian jazz scene. The pianist, who divides her time between Amsterdam and Seoul, has previously collaborated with musicians such as Ben van Gelder, Reinier Baas, and Pablo Held. Last year, she also performed at PaRaDoX alongside Danish bassist Jasper Høiby.

In her music, Im brings together a wide range of influences: from modern jazz and Korean indie music to cinematic instrumentals and ambient electronica. This combination creates a dreamy, atmospheric sound in which improvisation and melody continuously reinforce each other. She once said: “For a long time I thought you had to stick to one genre,” but it is precisely the breaking of those boundaries that now forms the core of her musical identity.

For this concert, Chaerin has written new compositions and experimented with a hybrid setup featuring acoustic grand piano and synthesizers. These pieces will not only be performed live for the first time, but also presented in a new venue setting. The Gashouder has recently undergone renovation and is set to become a new pop venue. In 2022, Im released the album The Back of Beyond as co-leader with producer Song Younam. She also received the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award, while the Dutch newspaper NRC named her Young Artist of the Year. Late last year, her debut solo album Midnight Resets was released.

Jazz Gems
The Grachtenfestival and the Keep an Eye Foundation join forces for a spectacular series of concerts called Jazz Gems. In this series, four “Gems” are selected—top-tier emerging talents who are given full freedom to curate their own program.
