Artist in Residence: Arjan with Indian ragas

A Saturday evening at the Royal Tropical Institute

In this concert, North Indian classical music takes centre stage. Trombonist Arjan Linker and tabla player Niti Ranjan Biswas perform several ragas: musical forms that are each linked to a specific mood, emotion, or time of day. Starting from calm, free improvisations, the musicians gradually build the music towards rhythmic and energetic climaxes. Because improvisation plays a central role, every performance is different and the music is created entirely in the moment.

Niti Ranjan Biswas is one of Europe’s most in-demand tabla players and trained with leading musicians in India. Arjan Linker began as a classical trombonist but has dedicated himself fully to Indian music and is now regarded as a pioneer of the Indian trombone. He studies with masters from centuries-old musical lineages and brings an instrument rarely heard in this tradition to the stage. Together, they bridge different musical worlds and traditions.

This concert is part of the 2026 Artist in Residence series. Discover here  more concerts featuring Arjan Linker or his compositions.
