Venue: Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ,  Piet Heinkade 1
Duration: 1,5 hours
UnderCurrent, this year's festival theme, also features in the boat trips on the canals. Locks regulate the flow of the waters, a job that used to be done by windmills. But how bad was the stench in those times gone by, when the wind would not be blowing, so that the windmills would not be working and the waters would not be flowing? Has any canal ever been filled in by royal decree, because of the stench? During this boat trip De Gebouwengids Wendeline Dijkman talks about the beautiful ring of canals and the currents in the historical city centre.

The Lighthouse Info
Venue: Felix Meritis,  Keizersgracht 324
Duration: 1,5 hours
The Lighthouse is one of Peter Maxwell Davies’ most successful opera's. The opera is based on the true story of three lighthouse keepers who due to violent storms are shut up in the lighthouse. The ship Hesperus leaves its home port of Stromness for a voyage to the Flannan Isles to relieve the lighthouse keepers. When the ship arrives however, the lighthouse is empty. The lamp is out, but in perfect working order. Breakfast sits untouched on the table. The beds have been vacated in a hurry. On a peg hangs one coat. The clock is not ticking ... Something is amiss.
There is no sign of life at the lighthouse and when a search party is organised the desperate calls are not answered. Slowly the horrific realisation dawns on the men that the lighthouse keepers have vanished into thin air.
Up to this day no one knows what really happened to the three lighthouse keepers of Eilan Mor on the Flannan Isles in the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland. Were they washed away by the waves? Did they go mad in the claustrophobically small room of the lighthouse? Were they abducted by spies or even aliens? One thing is certain: it still is one of the most enduring mysteries of British nautical history.

This year's festival theme UnderCurrent features in the boat trips on the IJ. Taken along by the currents of the river, we discover the East Harbour and the Eastern Docks. Subtext
'Subtext' is about different levels of communication. In Lukas Foss' mini opera Introductions and Goodbyes with a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti, Mr McC receives nine guest at his party. As the last guests have arrived, and everybody has been introduced to one another, the first guests are leaving. Mr. McC is left alone again.
The song cycle rom Jewish Folk Poetry by Dmitri Shostakovich contains many undercurrents of protest against Stalinism. The musical Yiddish influences are often humorous with dark undertones.
Schönberg's canon serves as a linking device and offers words of hope.
Samuel Barber's A Hand of Bridge is also based on a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti. Two couples give us an insight in their inner world as they play their game of bridge. Their thoughts are many, none of them are about the card game. Bill dreams of a beautiful woman, named Cymbeline. Sally is absorbed by a hat with peacock feathers. Geraldine is troubled by her relationship with her dying mother. And David finds himself in the middle of a true midlife crisis. He fantasizes about power, sex, money and all the other things he does not have.
With: Quatre Bouches:
Bauwien van der Meer, soprano; Petra Ehrismann, alto; Gerben Houba, tenor; Michel Poels, baritone; Abigail Richards, piano
