Wat vinden zij...?

For a British composer, to participate in the Grachtenfestival was an amazing experience. The atmosphere and setting of the events is unique, and the adventurous and enthusiastic attitude of the audience is fantastic - beyond anything I have experienced in Britain. I can't imagine a collection of short operas by an relatively unknown foreign composer attracting full houses in London, but the Grachtenfestival presentations of my mini-operas were packed! Your audience trusts you: the imaginative daring of your festival has taken them to new places, developing their willingness to take risks and experience something new. It was thrilling for me to hear my work performed with such spirit by marvellous young musicians in spectacular settings, and received with such warmth by a Dutch audience - who were hearing all this music for the first time. I cannot praise the Grachtenfestival too highly. I believe it is spreading the joy of music, enriching people's lives, broadening their horizons with fun, adventure, surprise and delight. You are making an extraordinary contribution to the cultural life of your country. I hope you flourish for many, many years.
